PENNY PAVILION
The Penney Pavilion is a small (14' x 14') outside room that transitions between the interior living spaces and future pool and garden of an existing residence. The pavilion patio ends, on axis, at the pocketed steps which are both pool entry and pool-side seating where one can dangle one's feet in the water while conversing with others either in the pool or seated under the pavilion roof. Situated in the u-shaped negative space formed by the three wings of the living spaces, the pavilion provides shady shelter that completes and unifies the difficult geometry of the existing home. Rainwater is conserved by the gutter and downspout system which is extended under the paver deck and collected for irrigation in a underground tank. Four large cantilevered concrete pillars minimize the exposed cedar framing and provide a pleasing simplicity and elegance.
